Structural, Referential, and Normative Information

چکیده
This article provides a comprehensive conceptual analysis of information. It begins with folk notion that information is tripartite phenomenon: something carried by signals about for some use. suggests has three main aspects: structural, referential, and normative. I analyze the individually necessary jointly sufficient conditions defining these aspects consider formal theories relating to each aspect as well. The reveals normative are hierarchically nested depends on which in turn structural.

Information structure, variation and the Referential Hierarchy
Silverstein (1976)’s hierarchy of features and ergativity (Referential Hierarchy) was proposed to capture apparent systematic variation with respect to word-class (pronouns versus nouns) in the expression of the grammatical functions Subject and Object and the semantic roles Agent and Undergoer linked to these functions. An assumption of the original hierarchy was obligatoriness of marking, rat...
متن کاملRecognizing Referential Links: An Information Extraction Perspective
We present an efficient and robust reference resolution algorithm in an end-to-end state-of-the-art information extraction system, which must work with a considerably impoverished syntactic analysis of the input sentences. Considering this disadvantage, the basic setup to collect, filter, then order by salience does remarkably well with third-person pronouns, but needs more semantic and discour...
متن کاملAspects of descriptive, referential, and information structure in phrasal semantics
Phrasal semantics is concerned with how the meaning of a sentence is composed both from the meaning of the constituent words, and from extra meaning contained within the structural organization of the sentence itself. In this context, grammatical constructions correspond to form-meaning mappings that essentially capture this “extra” meaning and allow its representation. The current research exa...
متن کاملInformation Technology Value Through Different Normative Lenses
The influence of IT investments on organizational performance is revisited. Bounded rationality, organizational controls, and political forces may constrain optimal selection of inputs and appropriate substitution between inputs. For example, firms may not be able to attain an optimal level of IT by substituting IT for labor (for reasons such as pressure from the labor union). Besides estimatin...
متن کاملOptimizing Potential Information Transfer with Self-referential Memory
This paper investigates an information-theoretic design principle, intended to support an evolution of a memory structure fitting a specific selection pressure: potential information transfer through the structure. The proposed criteria measure how much does associativity in memory add to the information transfer in terms of precision, recall and effectiveness. Maximization of the latter result...
